As a research foundation, we are committed to turn fundamental research into useful applications. By partnering with mobile operators and other aggregated data providers, we aim to address long-standing city management problems in unconventional ways.
Since 2005, as a research group, we have been working with European and American telecom operators on the idea of the “real-time city”, leveraging on the research carried out at the Senseable City Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Our projects have been exposed in major exhibitions around the world and served to inspire many on the potential of creating value from what mobile operators traditionally conceived as “by-product” of their operations.
We believe that our technology is mature to solve real-world problems and create innovative new applications in multiple markets:
• crowd management: How many people are there in a given area? • mobility analysis and forecasting: Where is traffic piling up? • evacuation support, emergency management: What percentage of people has left the critical area? • public transport management: What is the current demand for public transportation? • marketing and city advertisement: How many people will look at that billboard? • urban planning: What is the pattern of inflow and outflow of people from the city? • entertainment: What’s the hottest spot in town right now?
Thanks to our established relationship with KPN, the major mobile operator in the Netherlands, we took the big Amsterdam region as our first case study. In order to shape Current Amsterdam, we partnered with the Dutch Ministry for Transportation and Waters and the Amsterdam Police Department.
